Keep Up the Olympic Spirit
M. O. VARGHESE, Basket ball Player & Coach"

The game of Basket ball was invented and presented to the world by Dr. James Naismith, a physical Instructor from YMCA Gymnasium in Springfield, Masschusetts USA. A game that started with 18 men has grown into a game that more than 300 million people play worldwide.

The game that began with 13 basic rules has grown to become a game not for a specific culture or nation or ethnic group, but for an entire planet to share and enjoy. One of Naismiths famous quotes was that basket ball is never meant to be coached, anyway, only to be played.

Basket ball is also truly a great equalizer because anyone can play it anytime.

Basket ball is a game which has all the ingredients required to mould the personality of an individual by developing speed, stamina, anticipation, individual skills, sportsmanship, discipline and competitive spirit.

Today basket-ball is the fastest growing sport in the world. Some of the reasons for the growth of the game are:-

1) Basket-ball is a tremendously popular Spectator Sport, particularly on television. The televising of the NBA games worldwide, both men’s and women’s has influenced many people to take up the game.

2) The movements/action of the game keeps people involved. Although basket ball was invented as an indoor game, it is now played indoors and out-doors especially in India.

3) Although it is an extremely youthful sport with participation heaviest among teenage males, it is played with both sexes of all ages and sizes. Though there are advantages for being tall, there are also many opportunities for the skilful short players.

4) Basketball can be practiced and played alone. All you need is a ball, a basket and confined space.

5) Basket-ball is unique because unlike other games it can be easily modified. Although most organized basket-ball competitions consist of teams of 5 players, basket-ball can be played from full court 5 on 5 down to smaller groups of half court 3 on 3 and 2 of 2 and even 1 on 1.

As far as India is concerned the country is full of good coaches. But what it takes to be outstanding and win is a bunch of talented, obedient, disciplined and hardworking players with supporting parents. Listen parents of Chembur & Ghatkopar, a small advice - Let your children participate in any sports which the child is interested & talented for an hour in a day under a Systematic Coach wherein the child is taught the importance of fitness and the basic fundamentals of the sport it will certainly help the child to the extent to develop his overall personality and character. It will help us to build a better India.

Sports is important, it certainly moulds character and personality of an individual.
